Bronagh Blackwood is a lecturer in nursing at Queen’s University Belfast. In 2000 she was awarded an All-Ireland Nursing Research Fellowship towards a PhD evaluating the efficacy of protocolized weaning from mechanical ventilation in critically ill adults. She has published widely on the topic of protocolised weaning and the complexity of evaluating health care interventions such as weaning protocols and more recently, her work has included the paediatric population also. Bronagh has considerable experience in systematic reviewing encompassing reviews of effectiveness, diagnostic test accuracy and qualitative synthesis. Her reviews focus on acute nursing issues regarding ventilatory weaning (protocolised, automated and post-operative), treatment and diagnosis of sepsis; and on chronic issues regarding symptom management in acquired brain injury and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Seit 1980 Krankenschwester in der Anästhesie, Weiterbildung zur Fachkrankenschwester Anästhesie – und Intensivpflege und zur Leitung einer Funktionseinheit. Mehrjährige Tätigkeit in leitender Funktion als Pflegedienstleitung und als OP-Koordinatorin an verschiedenen Kliniken. Abschluss der Weiterbildung OP-Management beim BDA/DGAI in Nürnberg. Dozenten- und Referententätigkeit auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene zu den Schwerpunktthemen: OP-Management, Reorganisation im OP, Krankenhausorganisation und prozessorientierte Bauplanung. Derzeit tätig als Pflegemanagerin für strategische Weiterentwicklung, Prozessberatung und Marketing in der Pflege am Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein.

Professor Osterbrink is a registered general nurse who specialised in intensive care and anaesthesia as a Registered Nurse Anaesthetist (RNA). He holds a Master’s degree in nursing and health promotion from the University of Glasgow (UK) and a PhD in public health and nursing sciences from the University of Leuven (Belgium). He recently gained the degree of DHL of the University of North Florida, Jacksonville.
He is Professor and Dean of the Institute for Nursing Sciences at the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg, Austria. Since 2003 he has also been Professor (Tenure) for Nursing Sciences at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville, USA. Professor Osterbrink is a member of various advisory boards for journals and for educational and clinical initiatives. He has published over 50 articles and book chapters.
Professor Osterbrink’s research interests are pain management and also standardisation of pain therapy in hospital settings. He is Scientific Director of the German Pain Standard, which is state-of-the-art for the nursing profession in Germany (www.dnqp.de). Professor Osterbrink is also Principal Investigator of the project ‘Action Alliance Painfree City Muenster”, a 3-year health services research project designed to analyze the multiprofessional pain management in health care facilities in the model city Muenster, Germany (www.schmerzfreie-stadt.de).
